Your First Visit
FAQ's (
Frequently Asked Questions)
Q:
What can I expect at my first visit?
You will need to fill out brief Patient Information and Health History forms prior to your evaluation. To access these forms
.
You may download a form and complete this at home, or at our office. Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment time with any questions you may have regarding these forms.
Your PT will perform a comprehensive evaluation of the area to be treated. Be aware that we often examine the area above and below the treatment site, so dress accordingly. You may want to bring or wear loose fitting clothing--such as shorts, a t-shirt and sneakers.
Your PT will then develop a treatment program to address your problems. You are always involved in setting appropriate goals, so do not hesitate to ask questions.
Q:
How long will visits last?
The first visit (Initial Evaluation) usually lasts for 1-1 ½ hours. The follow up visits are usually shorter (30 minutes), but can often extend to over an hour depending on the patient’s needs.
Q:
Will my insurance pay for Physical Therapy?
Our office will check every patient’s insurance coverage at the start of physical therapy. Some insurance companies require a referral form from your Primary Care Physician (PCP), or a co-pay at every visit, while others may require you to pay a percentage share or a deductible.
Q:
How do I know when I should stop Physical Therapy?
The decision regarding your rehabilitation at MOPT involves many parties: you, your PT, your physician and your insurance company. Communication is very important. We will do our best to keep you up to date on your insurance coverage, but please know that it is also your responsibility to know your status. We will communicate with your physician via progress reports and phone calls when needed. Your PT will continually ask you about your progress and re-assess your condition to make sure you are getting closer to attaining your goals.
There are too many factors influencing how long it will take your body to heal (age, severity of the problem, general health). However, we will do our best to give you a time estimate.
Q:
Some say Physical Therapy is always painful, others say it feels good. Who’s right?
In general, Physical Therapy shouldn’t hurt or
increase your symptoms
. You may feel soreness that you have not experienced before. However, this is often the result of using a healthy muscle that you did not know existed.
On occasion, some conditions will be painful as your physical therapy starts, especially if you have post-operative tightness. Always feel free to express your concerns. We need to know how you respond to our treatments—because no two people are exactly alike.
Q:
What should I bring with me?
In order for your PT to give you the best care possible, please bring any diagnostic test results with you (written reports, not films). If you wear a brace or orthotic shoe inserts, please bring those as well. As previously mentioned, bring or wear loose fitting clothing, specifically a sleeveless shirt for a shoulder problem and shorts for a knee or hip problem.
Also, we will need a copy of your insurance card, a physician’s referral (if required by your insurance), and a physician’s prescription.
Q:
What kind of treatments do you do?
Your PT will determine what treatments are most appropriate for you and these may change with every visit. Initially, modalities may be used to help with pain, spasm and /or swelling. These include ultrasound, electrical stimulation, heat, ice, paraffin.
We will also incorporate stretches, strengthening exercises, muscle re-education, postural instruction, relaxation techniques, joint mobilization, massage and ergonomic instruction.
Q:
Will I owe a co-payment for each visit?
Depending on your insurance plan, if you have a co-payment it is expected to be paid at each visit. Please be advised that we only accept cash and checks.
